KTM RC390 Racing Team rider Billy Van Eerde, who is only 14 years old, won his first road race in the rain at Wakefield Park, near Goulburn. Billy now leads the Supersport 300 class of the Australian Championship by seven points after only two rounds.
Van Erde, a young dirt track ace, qualified fastest for the event in the wet, then went 2, 2, 1 across the three races to win the round from Jack Mahaffey and Zac Levy, after the last race was red-flagged due to excessive rain.
His win was true credit, not just to him but to his KTM motorcycle which – just a month ago – was a completely untried quantity in Australian racing conditions. The RC 390 billy rides is basically a standard stock motorcycle.
The KTM RC390 is a compliant, LAMS-approved commuter, but in true form KTM have given the bike great handling, braking and the best power-weight ratio in its class. Billy Van Erde had never been road racing before, but his dirt track experience and a bike that’s so easy to ride is giving him the winning edge.
