15 year old Billy Van Eerde takes pole and wins both races in the KTM RC390 Cup round staged in Malaysia last weekend at Sepang’s tricky 5.54km Circuit.
On his near standard KTM RC390, Van Eerde set a pole position of 2m35.220 before winning the first race by 0.098 over China’s Zhou Shengjunjie. In the second race Billy managed to get a nose in front of young Malaysian star Muhamad Adam Norrodin to win and better his pole time with a PB of 2m35.009 on the final lap.
The KTM RC390 Cup was held over 5 rounds in conjunction with the Malaysian Superbike Championship. Billy [#289] only competed in the last two rounds to gain some international experience and in preparation for his assault on the Red Bull Rookies MotoGP Cup Series and the Asia Talent Cup in 2018.
2017 was Billy’s first year in road racing having come from a dirt track background. He capped off the year by winning the ASBK Australian Supersport 300 Championship on his KTM RC390. To win the Aussie title, Billy beat all the other LAMS bike contenders including Yamaha’s R3 and Kawasaki’s Ninja 300.
Billy Van Eerde: “It was an awesome weekend in Sepang, the weather was on and off but luckily most of the time we rode it was dry. Race one it was very patchy, with lots of corners completely wet. One of the Chinese riders made a bit of a gap at the front but towards the end of the race I managed to pull back the gap and take the win! Race 2 was perfect conditions and a crazy race between 7 or 8 of us all the way to the finish. It came down to the last corner and saw a gap and took it and made it to the line in front. It was a perfect way to end the year. Now it’s time to train hard and prepare for next year’s racing.”
