Pros and Cons of Different Types of Motorcycles

Nicki here was after a small run around bike that was affordable and reliable. Two words that are synonymous with Kawasaki. Especially this 2025 Kawasaki KLX150 from Procycles Kawasaki Sydney.
The KLX150 is a lightweight, lams-approved, dual-sport bike built for fun on both dirt trails and light urban riding. It uses a simple 144 cc air-cooled, 4-stroke single-cylinder engine with a 5-speed gearbox, producing manageable power and torque, making it easy to handle on the road or in the bush. A full-size 21" front wheel and 18" rear wheels, USD front forks and Uni-Trak rear suspension offer surprisingly capable suspension travel, plus good ground clearance for bumps and obstacles. At 118 kg wet with a tall 865 mm seat height and narrow seat profile, the KLX150 is comfortable for most riders. With its MX-styled looks, electric (and kick) start, disc brakes, and straightforward mechanicals, it’s a versatile, affordable dual-sport option for those wanting easy commuting and casual off-road adventures.

This is Luke’s first motorcycle and he’s made a great start by choosing a 2025 Yamaha MT-03 from the brand-new Yamaha dealer on Sydney’s North Shore – Procycles Hornsby. Luke came in to check out his LAMS options. We had this MT-03 in stock and Luke ordered it with radiator guards and frame sliders, just to be on the safe side.

The Yamaha MT-03 was already a great entry-level motorcycle. First-time riders really liked its nimble handling, beginner-friendly power delivery, and comfortable, upright riding position. Key features remain the same, such as its 321cc parallel-twin engine, lightweight chassis, and aggressive "hyper naked" styling with dual LED running lights. But now its even better. With this latest model, Yamaha has loaded it with lots of significant updates including a new LCD dash, a smartphone Y-Connect system, a USB-A charging port, and an assist/slipper clutch.

Lauren came into Procycles Yamaha Hornsby a couple months ago looking for her first bike. She was initially in the market for a used Ninja 400 and asked us to give her a call if we traded one. Ninja 400’s are keepers for most people. A really great reliable bike, so you don’t see them come up very often. After a few weeks, Lauren didn’t want to wait any longer. The Yamaha YZF-R3 is a popular, user-friendly entry-level sportbike. It is so easy to ride, even as a first bike. Lauren gave us a deposit and within a few days she had the wind in her hair, the sun on her face and not a care in the world. You don’t see any motorcyclists lined up outside a psychiatrist’s office!

Keith was a regular rider up until about ten years ago. He loved his two-stroke sport bikes, and owned a few 600’s. But he hasn’t ridden since then. Six months ago, we got a phone call from the lovely people at the Make-A-Wish Foundation to see if we could help them make a child's wish come true. Of course, at Procycles Yamaha Hornsby, we said yes, and spoke about some different options that would work. Back then, Daniel and his family decided on a 50SX, due to Daniel's size, this was the perfect option. Leading closer to the date we had booked in to grant Daniel's wish, we got a call from Make a Wish; they said Daniel has grown quite a bit since they decided on a 50 and a 65 might be the better way to go. We switched bikes and got a Yamaha YZ65 ready for him instead. Since taking the bike home, Daniel has been getting lessons from Trailblazers and is enjoying every minute of it. Dane runs AE Luxury Tours, a tour company in Sydney. To experience his product first-hand, Dane does a lot of his own exploring, coming up with new ideas and places to recommend to his clients. Wagner has always been into his retro bikes. Like a lot of riders … he believes heritage is where its at. When Wagner saw this amazing offer on Yamaha’s XSR900 GP, at Procycles Yamaha Sydney, he could not pass it up. Scott is working his way through the BMW range. He’s a long-term customer of ours at Procycles BMW Sydney and he’s a BMW aficionado. This is a stylish and well-equipped cruiser that combines a classic look with modern technology. It’s certainly not a HD look-a-like. The quality build and high-end finish of this BMW is outstanding, and the character is truly something completely different. For a start, the R18 Bagger is loaded with extensive modern technology, including a large 10.25-inch TFT screen, a full suite of impressive electronic rider aids that make the bike so much easier and safer to ride. It also comes equipped with an amazing Marshall sound system, and Active Cruise Control with radar. And its powerful 1800cc engine feels like the best and most suited usage of the Big Boxer yet. We already knew Paul does not like to compromise. So, when Procycles BMW Hornsby traded this near-new BMW M1000 XR Competition, we contacted Paul and he jumped at the chance to upgrade his ride. Who could blame him? 

This is an incredibly fast, adrenaline-inducing motorcycle, that delivers over 200 horsepower and 113 Nm of torque, capable of superbike-like acceleration and handling. The bike is extremely fast, with impressive 0-100km/h times of around 3.15 seconds and 0-200km/h in 7.4 seconds. It is embellished with a distinctive M-specific colour scheme and lashings of carbon-fibre everywhere. It’s also a comfortable, versatile sports touring bike, with dynamic electronic Marzocchi suspension, customizable ride modes and amazing competition-bred brakes with M four-piston callipers on the front. There is simply no other ride like it.

It’s pretty obvious that Karl likes the BMW S1000 XR model. This is his third one! He just adds them to his collection. So, it’s routine for us at Procycles BMW Hornsby to put one aside for him every time a new model comes out. What’s not to love. The BMW S1000 XR is regarded as the best sit-up superbike on the market.

This sports-tourer produces 170 hp, and the new model has updates that include a 5hp power increase, an electronic BMS-O throttle-by-wire system and expanded Shift Assistant Pro functions for better load change damping. Plus visual refinements to the front fairing and paint schemes. Karl gets superbike performance with all-day riding comfort  thanks to optimized seat geometry for more freedom of movement on his long rides, available in three different heights.

The BMW S1000 XR comes standard with an Adaptive headlight, Riding modes Pro (incl. HSC Pro, MSR, ABS Pro & DTC), Dynamic ESA chassis, Keyless Ride and a handy Storage compartment under the seat.

Brian loves his BMWs. Particularly the GS Adventure. In recent years he’s ridden out of Procycles BMW Sydney on a R1200 GSA, R1250GSA and a 40 Years Anniversary model. And here he is picking up his new generation BMW R1300 GS Adventure Triple Black, equipped with Auto Shift Assist, Adaptive Vehicle Height Control and Enduro Pack Pro. And Brian ordered the Enduro Package Pro, which adds Engine bars, Under-carriage protection, Adjustable footrests and brake lever.

Adem was quick and snapped up a great deal on this BMW CE 04 during our Black Friday Demo Sale  at Procycles BMW Sydney.The BMW CE 04 is a futuristic electric scooter with impressive technology, delivers exhilarating, instant, "ballistically quick" acceleration, with a 0-80 km/h time of around 2.6 seconds, making it very quick in city traffic. The top speed is around 128 km/h, but it is best suited for urban environments. Regenerative braking is a key feature, helping to top up the battery, especially in stop-and-go traffic. The CE 04 is surprisingly nimble due to its low centre of gravity and long wheelbase.The overall design has been polarising for some riders. Ivan lives locally, so it was easy for him to call into our Procycles BMW Hornsby shop and get acquainted with this beautiful BMW C400 GT ion.

 He wanted a scooter that was comfortable, convenient, economical and safe. But it also had to look good. The BMW C400 GT ticks all the boxes. Some reviewers have gone as far as saying the C400 GT is classy, elegant and mature. We are not sure about the mature bit. This scooter is powerful, with solid handling and excellent dynamic brakes. If Ivan doesn’t have a pillion on the back, he can really cut loose, particularly on the freeway. Jivana was initially shopping for a KTM Duke 200 for her first bike, but she found it too tall for her, so she was back to square one. But not for long. After purchasing a BMW R1300 GS Trophy from Procycles BMW Hornsby earliker this year, Ed fracked up 8,000 kms around South Eastern Australia and another 2,500 kms through the Central Alps in Europe on the same spec bike. Sam is a Navy man, away on deployment in the USA, when he saw our Procycles KTM Sydney used bike listing on bikesales.com.au Sam sent an enquiry through from the U.S. and we described the motorcycle to his satisfaction. So, he gave us a deposit, and we held the bike for him until he returned. Sam scored himself an excellent 2023 KTM 390 Duke. A cost-effective, naked street bike to finish his P's test on and get himself a licence.

Sam’s 390 Duke has a great power to weight ratio. It’s powered by a 373 cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine that delivers 44 hp and 37 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed gearbox and a slipper-type clutch. Built around a powder-coated steel trellis frame with premium WP APEX suspension and sporting a 320 mm front brake disc, with radial calliper and dual-channel ABS (including Supermoto mode), it’s designed for sharp handling and confident braking. With a seat height of around 830 mm, a compact 13.4-litre fuel tank and very light weight, the 390 Duke is a nimble and has features not seen on other bikes in this class. Including an LED headlight, and a colour TFT display with Bluetooth connectivity.

Cameron came into Procycles KTM Hornsby a few months ago to look at small capacity adventure bikes, and we mentioned we were taking pre-orders for the new KTM 390 Adventure R. The 2025 KTM 390 Adventure R is a highly capable, off-road-focused middleweight adventure bike with agile handling, and superior control, thanks to its robust technology package. While it can handle multi-day long-distance destinations, its lightweight chassis and 230 mm adjustable suspension give away its real purpose - tackling tough terrain. That’s what David did at Procycles BMW Sydney, when he purchased a brand-new BMW S1000RR M Sport. This bike is currently in price promotion, but there are only a few left at this price and the promo deal runs out in November.

The M Sport package adds features like carbon wheels, M Sport suspension, and aerodynamic winglets that generate downforce, making it lighter and more stable at high speeds. Stan wanted a great looking bike and one light enough to really zip around town, he picked up his BMW F900 R Sport, from Procycles BMW Hornsby, and got exactly that!

For 2025, the BMW F900 R really steps into the limelight. BMW has updated this model with a new chassis and new ergonomics. The F900 R gains Marzochhi 43mm upside-down forks, instead of the previous telescopic setup. It provides rebound and compression damping, as well as spring preload adjustment. And new lighter wheels, shave around 1.8kg. For 2025, it’s producing 105bhp at 8,500rpm and 68.6lb ft at 6,500rpm. Another change is the switch to a lithium battery, shaving another kilo in weight, bringing it down to 208kg, some 3kg lighter than before.

The new F900 R feels more like a true mid-capacity naked roadster. With a dynamically more aggressive riding position, sportier suspension and lower weight, this bike is more like a baby S1000 R, and the Sport tricolour paint scheme, gives it a real performance look. Stan will have no problem getting around the city on his new BMW F900 R Sport … and probably a lot faster than he ever has before.

This is a ‘Ride Around Australia” update from our good Japanese friend Makoto, who has made it back to South Australia. Makoto set out from Sydney in the beginning of September on a CB500X trade-in that he purchased from us at Procycles in St Peters.

Makoto set out from Sydney to Cairns, Ayers Rock, Darwin, Broome, Perth, and now Adelaide. He reports it was extremely hot between Katherine and Perth. His CB500X has been running well – no dramas, all Makoto has had to do was replace his tyres, front and rear sprockets and chain. Makoto plans to get back to Sydney and back to Procycles to complete his journey by the end of November. Wow! What an adventure.

Richard is a long term Procycles BMW Hornsby customer and already has one M Sport in his garage. Richard already owns a BMW M1000 XR, and he loves it so much he thought he would add to his collection. To make a pigeon-pair, Richard scored himself a BMW M1000 R Competition.

This is a high-performance hyper-naked motorcycle with incredible power and torque. It’s easy and civilised to ride at low speeds, but when you light it up, you better hang on tight. Just as well it has excellent brakes. This rocket ship features a 999cc inline four-cylinder engine with ShiftCam, producing 154 kW (210hp) and 113 Nm of torque.

The 2025 BMW M1000 R Competition is the Bikesales Bike of the Year. Key updates for this model year include larger aerodynamic winglets for increased downforce, a revised quick-action throttle (58°), and an updated Dynamic Traction Control and Race ABS Pro system. The bike is equipped with M Carbon wheels, M Billet parts, a Titanium exhaust, and comes in a M Motorsport colour scheme of stunning M graphics over Black Storm Metallic.

Kurt was spending the day riding around Sydney, visiting different dealerships to see what bikes were available. He wasn’t set on anything specific - just exploring his options. While making his rounds, he called in to see us at Procycles St Peters, we are Sydney’s newest Yamaha dealer, and Kurt came in to check out our latest showroom.

One bike immediately caught Kurt’s attention - the 2024 Yamaha XSR900GP. A retro-styled motorcycle that blends the glory days of ’80s and ’90s road racing with modern tech. Inspired by Yamaha’s Grand Prix heritage and heavily influenced by the racebikes, this GP edition isn’t just a nod to nostalgia, it's one of the best all-rounder sportsters Yamaha has ever produced.

The XSR900GP isn't just a looker. With its perfect blend of power, performance, and the XSR900GP runs the same 889cc CP3 triple-cylinder engine found in the latest MT-09 and Tracer 9 GT. That means 117 hp and 93Nm of torque, from an engine that feels alive in every part of the rev range. Yamaha’s crossplane concept delivers a barky, raw power delivery that makes the GP feel like a lightweight superbike with the soul of a two-stroke. Plus, under the skin, lies the latest in cutting-edge technologies. Modern tech like three ride modes, Sport, Street and Rain, complemented by the ability to create two custom modes where you can fine-tune throttle response, traction control, and more. Kurt also gets adjustable suspension, cornering ABS, and slide control.

Procycles Yamaha Sydney, also offered Kurt a massive rebate that made it an unbeatable deal. Kurt saved $4,500 off the retail price, bringing down his on-road cost to $16,999.

Daniel came into Procycles Yamaha Sydney, at St Peters, looking for a solid and reliable scooter. He had recently heard that we were now Yamaha dealers, so he gave us a call to find out more. After speaking with one of our salesmen, Daniel mentioned that he was after a 2025 Yamaha NMAX.

The NMAX is a scooter in very high demand, but we managed to secure one. Once we let Daniel know, he came straight in with his deposit.

The new NMAX features a new engine, frame and drive system, high comfort suspension, combined with a premium electronics package. This third generation NMAX 155 takes entry level sports scooters to an even more sophisticated ride. In finding the balance between the new engine and new frame, the front and rear suspension settings were optimised to achieve a comfortable ride. In addition, new lightweight cast wheels reduce unsprung weight. The NMAX also has Traction Control and optimised front and rear disc brakes with Dual channel ABS.

NMAX 155 uses a Smart Key System. If the rider has the Smart Key on them, the machine detects its presence, without needing to insert the key itself. The underseat storage compartment offers a 23.3 L capacity and a full-face helmet fits inside. Download the Yamaha Connect app to access Smartphone information like calls, e-mails or text messages and remaining battery level. Other features include: Handy front pockets near the rider on both sides with a 12v socket for charging accessories.

Yosef came into our Procycles Kawasaki Hornsby store last week to have a look at our range of LAMS approved bikes. He had ridden a Ninja 300 in the past, but that was a long while ago. They were happy days and Yosef was keen to get back into it. When he saw the new generation Kawasaki Ninja 500 and how much the bike had improved since back then, it was a no-brainer. He put down a deposit and was back in a few days for new bike day.

The Ninja 500 is a big improvement on the old Ninja 300’s already great platform, with a larger 451cc twin-cylinder engine, more aggressive styling, LED lighting, a new LCD instrument cluster, and Smartphone Connectivity. The new Kawasaki Ninja 500 is Australia’s favourite LAMS motorcycle and its popular with a lot of experienced riders as well. The Ninja 500 delivers 33.4 kW at 9,000 rpm with 46.6 Nm of torque and weighs only 171 kg. More than enough power for LAMS riders and to keep everyone else interested as well.

Maia is new to motorcycling and so far she’s doing it all right. Maia came into our brand-new Procycles Yamaha Hornsby store to sit on a few of the LAMS bikes and ask some advice about where to start. Like most first-timers, Maia wasn’t so fussed about the specs, but easy to ride, comfort, and of course good looks, were high on her list of priorities.

Our freshly-minted Yamaha sales guys steered Maia towards Yamaha’s new model R3. She absolutely loved its beautiful Nebular Blue / White colorway and new generation R-Series styling with improved aesthetics.

It was hard for Igor to find a replacement for his Multistrada, but as soon as he test rode our Procycles Sydney BMW M1000XR. demo, he knew he was on a winner.

BMW’s new M1000 XR is an engineering masterpiece that brings sportbike performance to the crossover touring category. With a bit of M-sport magic, BMW has turned this already rapid tourer into a devastatingly quick missile that’s comfortable enough for two.

BMW has added “M” magic into the S1000 XR, creating a machine that’s faster, sharper, and more capable than ever before. It features a 450cc liquid-cooled DOHC 4-stroke engine, delivering 58 hp, with a 5-speed transmission. The bike's lightweight aluminium frame makes it agile, while the fully adjustable, 48mm KYB inverted fork and a KYB rear shock suspension soaks up the bumps on any terrains. The WR450F also boasts advanced electronics, including a 44mm Mikuni fuel injection system for precise fuelling and improved throttle response. At Procycles KTM Sydney, we see a fair bit of Craig. He’s bought KTM’s and BMW’s off us in the past and he still owns a BMW R1250 GS Trophy for his serious, long-distance adventure touring, but he also wanted something a little lighter for the somewhat more technical stuff and to have a bit of fun on the weekends, without having to get his big bike out.

When Craig saw KTM announcing the upcoming 390 Adventure R and he took a close look at the real-world specs, he contacted us and got his name on the list to see one as soon as they were released. Good choice Craig. The KTM 390 Adventure R is the most off-road capable middleweight adventure bike in its segment. It’s got plenty of useable power, the most complex WP suspension in its class and the brakes work well on and off the road.

The Adventure R feels nimble, weighing in at 165kg dry, it’s 10kg less than the CFMoto 450MT, and a shorter wheelbase gives it a more agile feel in the dirt. It has a tall screen and a neat Nav-Tower style display unit that houses a 5-inch TFT display, a USB-C outlet and the electronics suite with a solid array of rider aids. Plus, an LED headlight. Within the 390 Adventure R’s bag of e-tricks you’ll find three ride modes, a 3D IMU that governs lean-sensitive ABS and traction control, throttle response adjustability, as well as optional Quickshifter and cruise control.

Steve is from Victoria and was up in Sydney for the BMW GS Master Class. He’s a Safari veteran. Steve has a good mate, Max, who is a long term Procycles BMW Sydney customer. Max brought him into the dealership for a tyre swap, in preparation for the Master Class. While they were here, they were checking out what bikes we had on the floor, when they came across this BMW R1300 GS Adventure, one of our fully loaded, quality trades. The previous owner was also a regular GS Safari-goer and the guys recognised the bike. They also knew the owner only put nothing but quality parts on his bikes. From the full luggage system to the additional Lone Rider fog lights using HEX ezCan integration. We were able to turn this bike around within the day so Steve could use his new bike for the GS training. A great opportunity to get to know his GS and then enjoy the ride home back to Victoria.

This is Jaime and her brand new 2026 Kawasaki ZX-6R. Jaime called us at Procycles Kawasaki Hornsby a few weeks ago looking for a new 2026 Kawasaki ZX-6R. At the time, the ’26 model hadn’t been released, although we were expecting to get the bikes any day. Jaime knew she wanted her bike in the KRT colours, so we made sure she was first on the list. And it wasn’t long before we were ringing Jamie to tell her it was new bike day.Jaime knows her stuff. The 2026 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R is a real SuperSport motorcycle. She chose the new colour scheme of Lime Green with Matte Grape stripes and Steel Grey highlights. Key features include a 4.3-inch TFT display, Integrated Power Modes combining Traction Control, a Quick Shifter, and the Intelligent Anti-lock Brake system. Suspension is courtesy of Showa Separate Function fully adjustable Big Piston Forks, hangingoff a Pressed aluminium perimeter frame. The Ninja ZX-6R grips the road with Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tyres.

Jonah is new to motorcycle riding and was looking for a solid first bike that suited his style and size, while being practical for everyday use.

He came into our Procycles Kawasaki Sydney dealership to have a look around, gather some information, and hopefully find the right bike. Something with a full-frame size that would offer a comfortable ride for his height.

Our sales guys recommended he try the Kawasaki Versys-X 300, a versatile, entry-level adventure-style motorcycle that’s affordable, with comfortable ergos, and surprising off-road capability. Shifts are quick and crisp. It was pretty clean when we traded it, but just to be sure, the bike went onto our workshop for its 40-point health check and came out the other side with flying colours. This naked boxer roadster combines agility, performance and comfort in a package that is as suitable for twisty mountain roads, daily commuting, and especially a two-up tour.

The 1,254 cc 2-cylinder air/liquid-cooled boxer engine delivers 136 hp and 105 ft-lbs of torque. Thanks to BMW ShiftCam technology, which varies intake valve timing and lift, the R1250 R delivers outstanding power and torque across the entire rpm range.

Gabriel is one of the Procycles Sydney salesmen here at St Peters. Ever since he started riding, Gabriel always dreamed of owning a BMW S1000RR, his ultimate motorcycle.

After waiting ages, and riding a few other bikes in the meantime, Gabriel finally decided to make that dream a reality. He put a plan together but still had plenty of time to organise his selection of accessories, including an SC-Project exhaust system. Finally, his new bike day came around and Gabriel was able to take his dream motorcycle home.

Quite a few of the Procycles people ride BMW S1000 RRs. They can ride anything we sell, but, choose to spend their own money on an RR. Simply because an S1000 is about as exciting as a road-going superbike gets. The rush of controlled acceleration is addictive beyond all reason. He has just traded his R1300 GS Adventure on a new BMW R1300 RT Triple Black, a motorcycle which has been redefined by BMW, with an emphasis on carefully selected equipment, comfort and technology. Stephen was happily cruising around on his BMW R18 Bagger, but he was missing the excitement of a sports bike. When BMW went all-out and launched the R1300 R with major upgrades, it was enough to convince Stephen to trade the Bagger on this gorgeous next-gen sports tourer, with Option 719 high-quality optional equipment and boasting state-of-the-art technology. This new model comes in an exclusive colour scheme: Blackstorm Metallic. With visual highlights, such as the painted seat insert, the painted air blades and the exclusive “Option 719” badge to complete the look.

Stephen gets the performance he was missing with outputs of 107kW (145hp) at 7,750rpm and 149Nm of torque at 6,500rpm. Max revs are bumped to 9,000rpm, with improved smoothness and fuel efficiency thanks to BMW’s ShiftCam variable valve timing technology.

A completely redesigned chassis with a new steel sheet metal main frame and die-cast aluminium rear subframe sheds weight while improving rigidity and mass centralisation. The result is sharper handling, and better cornering stability. Lighter 17-inch wheels save over 1.4kg in rotational mass.

The suspension has had a major upgrade with a new 47mm USD fork up front and revised EVO Paralever rear setup. For the first time on a production motorcycle, the optional Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) system allows the fork’s spring rate to be electronically adjusted mid-ride, alongside damping and rear preload compensation—great news for riders coping with different luggage loads.

Stephen initially wanted a manual, but after he test rode the Automatic, at Procycles BMW Sydney, there was no going back. BMW’s Automated Shift Assistant enables fully automatic clutch operation for seamless gear changes—either manually via the foot lever or in a fully automatic mode.
